Hemodialysis is becoming increasingly more available to pet owners who wish for the highest quality of medical care for their pets. Indications include acute kidney injury (resulting from well recognized etiologies, such as nephrotoxicants, and emerging causes, including leptospirosis, a disease that is increasingly recognized in southern California), chronic kidney disease, acute intoxications (including intoxications that have extra-renal manifestations), severe or refractory immune-mediated disease, and diuretic resistant heart failure. This lecture introduces the general practitioner to the indications for hemodialysis, as well as the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to be able to recommend this treatment.
